As an overpronated runner and person with flat feet I’ve always dreamt about running without issues or pain and I’m sure that many of you can understand me. I tried many different running shoes and some of them was fine for me, but when I received my Kayano pair, it changed everything. Asics latest release in the overpronators field is already here, the [easyazon_link asin=”B00IEVUQTM” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Asics gel Kayano 21[/easyazon_link] came up with an excellent cushioning that has never seen before in the Kayano series and even in the Nimbus series for my opinion. There are some improvements and updates of the sockliner and the midsole and few new features, just keep reading, so, let’s go!

The sole

The Kayano 21, like most of the recent Asics releases, has rubber sole that constructed with the FluidRide midsole. By the way, don’t worry if you are not familiar with some of the words in this review like FluidRide, FluidFit and etc, I will explain all of them as clearly as possible. The FluidRide is the midsole technology of most of the latest Asics running shoes. This midsole structure provides cushioning and bounce-back effect while keeping the shoes light and durable. Asics claims that one of the upgrades in the Kayano 21 since the previous model is the reduced weight of the midsole by 15% and increase of the “bounce back” by 20%. During the road test, I didn’t feel any improvement and I think that the Kayano 21 still feels heavy due to the DuoMax support. However for overpronators it is worth the additional weight (we will discuss that later).

The midsole

The outsole structure made of AHAR- acronym for Asics High Abrasion Rubber, it grants cushioning and durability. The whole outsole remain without changes except new crash pad at the rarefoot that designed for overpronators, I have to say that when I tested it I noticed the change by the soft transition to the rarefoot while running.

Cushioning & Support systems

Like the [easyazon_link asin=”B00ES81IME” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Nimbus 16[/easyazon_link] and the previous Kayano model Asics used the same rarefoot and forefoot cushioning system. To whom that don’t know, the cushioning system structure made of gel units and placed between the midsole and the outsole. The gel units are helping to soften the shock back from the ground during runs and allow running on different surfaces without hurting your feet. In my opinion Asics did a great job with this model in regard to the cushioning properties.

The Kayano shoe type is a stability shoe, therefore, it constructed with the Dynamic DuoMax support system, DuoMax is the name of the current support technology of Asics. This system also exists in the GT 2000 model and in most of the stability shoes of Asics, what make them compatible with overpronators.

The upper

Excuse me about the laziness, but the upper of the Kayano 21 is exactly the same as the Nimbus 16’s, so I’ll present a quote from the Nimbus 16 review by Ellen Mor & Dan Minor – some of our team authors:

Asics claim that with their upper structure, the relationship between the runner’s foot and the upper unit will be “truly customized glove-like fit”, so we went out to check the claims. The Nimbus 16 upper is using the Asics FluidFit technology, the current technology presents an upper made of soft mesh that can be easily stretched around the top of the foot. This feature provides superb personal fit and support for every runner, while it still keeps the breathability of the shoes.

There is another factor that had to be considerable in our review and it is the eyelets, the discrete eyelets are splitting the tension all over the foot in order to improve the personalized fit and comfort. The combining of both the upper and the discrete eyelets creates a fitting environment and an outstanding plush sensation. For a change, we had no any compliments about this part.

Just one thing that I noticed during the road test is that the upper tongue tend to slide down and I found it slightly disturbing, not a big drawback, but I think that it should be known by the consumers.

Guidance systems & Heel structure

Same as the Nimbus 16 so I’ll just continue to quote:

Let’s start with the heel system, In this model Asics used the Exoskeletal heel counter as their heel clutching system, The Exoskeletal, which is also have been used in the Kayano 21 model, is clutching the heel area in order to support it and we have to say that it’s doing the job well. Besides of that, this system also provides a suited environment for the heel while remaining the foot stable.

Ok, so lets move to the guidance systems, there are three major guidance properties that combined and connected together in order to create perfect gait cycle. The first one is the guidance line – a flex groove in a shape of a line, placed along the bottom of the shoes. The guidance line has designed to improve your step land motion. The other one is the “Guidance trusstic system”, this particular system is related to the midfoot and responsible for a stable connection between the forefoot and the rarefoot. This connection is providing a smooth transition between the edge parts of the foot.

The sockliner & Inner shoe

One of the significant improvements at the Kayano 21 model is the new ComforDry X-40 sockliner, the X-40 is providing more 40% bounce back and durability than the standard sockliner which is performing in the Kayano 20. If you are an overpronated runner like me and still have back pain or feet pain with other stability shoes, this sockliner may be your savior.

When I had to choose the Kayano size I realized that the fit is not identical to the previous model so I checked why and during my in-depth research, I found that due to a new addition of lining layer the fit is not the same. Asics added soft fabric layer in the inner shoe under the upper, which make the fit slightly tight than the original. So what should you do? if you are usually taking D width, with the Kayano 21 I recommend you to take the [easyazon_link asin=”B00IEVVHU4″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]2E width[/easyazon_link] or [easyazon_link asin=”B00IEVVTMA” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]4E width[/easyazon_link], depends on what you regularly wear. In most of the cases, half size bigger solve the problem and you should consider that the new lining layer make the fit really slightly tight, so even if you would take the regular width or size it will be fine.

Colors, Sizes & other editions

If you still didn’t read about the change in the sizes, check the “the sockliner & Inner shoe” section above.

Consumer Ratings

I know that at a first glance in the [easyazon_link asin=”B00IEVUQTM” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]ratings in amazon[/easyazon_link] it looks like the Kayano 21 model isn’t at the top and so much popular but when you are trying to read the reviews and the feedbacks you understand that 95% of the compliments are about the changed fit and size. Fortunately, in your case, after reading my complete Asics gel Kayano 21 review, you already know what to do about the sizes and which fit to get so you are set (if you not check the “the sockliner & Inner shoe” section above). Except this part, all of the feedback are totally awesome about this product and the consumers are completely satisfied.

Price

For my opinion the biggest drawback of this model is the price tag, despite the fact that you can find a [easyazon_link asin=”B00IEVUQTM” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]good price on amazon[/easyazon_link], it is still pretty expensive. If you interested in cheaper shoes that is close to this model, for my opinion you should try the [easyazon_link asin=”B00GU7BC9U” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Asics GT-2000 2[/easyazon_link], but for overpronators it is highly recommended to purchase the Kayano 21, take my word, you won’t regret it.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the Kayano 21 is the best model in the Kayano series and it is must have shoes for overpronators and people with flat feet. This shoe is very healthy for beginners, those who over pronate will enjoy the stability and cushioning features in contrast to the previous models (20 & 19). Normal runners can enjoy it too, but I would recommend them to purchase the [easyazon_link asin=”B00ES81IME” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Asics Gel-Nimbus 16[/easyazon_link] since it better for normal feet. As I mentioned before, if you can’t afford it because of the expensive price, you should try the GT 2000 2, but REMEMBER, it is still not good as the Kayano 21. So, what are you waiting for?[easyazon_link asin=”B00IEVUQTM” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”kayano21review-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”] Buy it from amazon.com now![/easyazon_link]

The ASICS Fluidfit have given me lower back problems – potential buyers may like to discuss this possibility with the shop assistant to ensure their frame won’t have issues.
